From our Founder’s Desk: Why fine jewellery pricing has always been opaque - and what we're doing about it

The fine jewellery industry runs on information asymmetry.

The seller knows the margin. The customer does not. That gap is where a lot of the anxiety around buying jewellery lives - the nagging sense that you might be paying the wrong price without any way to know.

How traditional pricing works

In a traditional jewellery retail environment, the price on a piece reflects a retail markup applied to the wholesale cost of the stone and metal. That markup varies by retailer, by market, by the salesperson's read of what a customer will pay, and sometimes by how persistent the negotiation is.

Two customers in the same store can pay different prices for the same piece.

The customer has no visibility into any of this. They are making a significant purchase based on a number without components - with no way of knowing whether it is right.

The diamond grading system was supposed to help. IGI and GIA certification gave buyers a standardised language for the stone. But the markup on the setting, the craftsmanship, the retail environment - all of that remained invisible.

What changed with lab-grown diamonds

The growth of lab-grown diamonds created significant pricing pressure on the traditional model. As near-identical stones became available at a fraction of the cost of natural equivalents, retailers had to justify the premium in terms other than price. Some did. Many kept the markup and hoped customers would not ask questions.

The more fundamental shift: lab-grown diamonds made diamond pricing visible. When you can see a near-identical stone at a very different price, you start asking what the difference actually is.

What transparency looks like in practice

HEIREST's configurator updates the price in real time with every decision you make.

Choose 18k over 14k gold: the price changes by an amount that reflects the additional gold content. Add a carat of weight: the price changes by an amount that reflects the stone cost at that specification. You can see exactly what you are paying for, because the price is built from components you can inspect individually.

This is not a promotional claim. It is an architectural decision. We built the pricing model before we built the product around it - because a customer who understands what they are paying for makes a better decision, and trusts the brand more for it.

The alternative is a number. We would rather give you the components.

Meet our Founder - Liam Whittaker

Before starting the business, he served as COO of ZURU Edge - one of the world's fastest-growing consumer goods companies - where he spent over a decade scaling global operations. He founded HEIREST because he believed fine jewellery deserved a better model: one where the customer has full information, full control, and every decision in the piece is theirs to make.
